Data Center Market Powers Up to Meet Cloud Demand

Angus Loten, an enterprise information technology writer for The Wall Street Journal describes the growing market for computing power and related data-centers as more U.S. companies switch to online software and cloud based technology platforms. In fact, more than 171 megawatts have been consumed at facilities in the country’s largest data-center rental markets, through the first six months of 2019.

Citing a recent CBRE report which estimates that data-center operators in key markets have increased total power capacity by 200 megawatts this year, up roughly 8% from the same period last year, as a number of mergers and acquisitions among data-center operators vying for prime locations have driven average rental rates down, the report said.

"Data center tenants are also becoming more demanding about the availability of power, network capacity and time to add space", said Richard Villars, IDC’s research vice president for data centers and cloud.
