World’s Largest Corporations Pledge to Fight Climate Change

Some of the world’s largest companies are joining forces to accelerate efforts to fight the climate crisis. Google, Disney, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, Salesforce, Unilever, and Workday have joined forces to increase the scale and impact of business investment in climate solutions. They have partnered to create the Business Alliance for Scaling Climate Solutions (BASCS). This group’s objectives are to gather and disseminate climate solutions, connect with existing initiatives around the community, provide a platform for climate conversations, and then share success stories, best practices, and opportunities.

The companies believe that the time for climate action is now, and businesses, government, and individuals must step up to meet climate change. Climate experts say the transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean emissions will require up to $3.8 trillion annually through 2050.

The BASCS has partnered with the Environmental Defense Fund, the UN Environment Program, and the World Wildlife Fund to share funding opportunities, research and strategize about speeding up and implementing climate solutions. The BASCS wants to invest in emissions reductions and follow through to see these investments’ impacts. They will focus on implementing real change by watching companies report on their carbon emissions. By monitoring companies, they’ll ensure that each emission reduction and removal reported by large corporations is authentic and verified and not double-counted.

This leadership and formation of the BASCS by private-sector corporations can contribute to President Biden’s goal to slash carbon emissions in half by 2030.
